A survey of bizarre 1914 happenings spans battlefield feats and odd civic tales. From Marius Boiron’s staged German prisoner gambit to hatpins and boiling water defending Belgian plants, the year’s curios mix war’s grimness with human whimsy and luck across Europe and America.
Old Village Seal DUG UP in Fredonia
A. J. Harper found the original 1829 brass village seal while digging on his property at 134 Central avenue. The 1 inch by 1/2 inch seal bears a row of gaslights and marks Fredonia as an early lighted town before petroleum discovery. The seal was turned over to village clerk Harry B. Espy for safekeeping as a souvenir of early days.
