Takozid and a Wynants war party plan a surprise assault on the Mohawks at Cohoes Falls during a spring freshet. The attack, delayed by rain, aims to strike at night as floods threaten escape, with reverence to spirits Neebanawbaig and Weeling guiding their bold expedition.
Amid fierce storms and floodwaters Takozid and his Wynants assault Mohawk lodges at Cohoes. The massacre leaves most Mohawks dead or scattered. Takozid escapes by canoe but dies after a heroic final battle. Mohawks scalp him for a trophy as the river roars over the falls.
A historical sketch recounts the Mohawk instigation and a frightened tribe decimated by wars and colonial ambivalence. It notes a freshet in 1647, an Indian saved at Cahoes Falls, and Governor Keift responsible for savage acts that tainted his term and recall.
