New York governor Theodore Roosevelt and California’s Hiram Johnson were nominated by acclamation at the Progressive Party convention after long platform debates. Roosevelt and Johnson appeared to wild acclaim as 15,000 attendees sang, the banner proclaimed unity, and observers likened the event to a religious revival.
Pittsburg authorities report an attack on Loretta Kintz in the Pitcairn outskirts. A 70 man armed posse, aided by M. Salyards who supplied weapons, hunts the unidentified assailant amid fears he will be lynched if captured. The victim's cry drove the attacker off.
The Progressive convention in Chicago nominated Theogdore Roosevelt by acclamation marking a unified declaration of support. Delegates from multiple states praised his platform and leadership as the party charts a course for the upcoming campaign.
Mrs. Winifred Davis of Utica and her companion William Morris disappeared while fishing from an anchored boat on Oneida Lake. Davis was found three miles from the scene with no water in her lungs, raising theories of pre death heart failure or drowning. Morris’s body has not been found after 36 hours of search. his cap was later recovered. Davis, 32, worked at the House of the Good Shepherd and left five children. Morris was janitor at the same institution.
A Sofia dispatch reports Turks moving from Katchana to Sermenina killing residents of two Bulgarian villages en route. Sermenina’s mayor was shot after arrest. Bulgarian volunteers attacked Turk troops for five hours but were defeated and fled to the mountains. Turks then looted and burned the town, with about 150 escapes. Confirmation from Sofia is not yet established.
Chicago August 8 Patrick McAuliffe was jailed in Englewood for beating his daughter Julia 19. The court ordered him to board the first train to Pittsburg and stay there at least a month, preventing further abuse of his wife and daughter.
A New York Central Rome Watertown and Ogdensburg line train wrecked at Camden 30 miles south of Utica at 9 30 Tuesday night. Engineer Stumff of Watertown and Fireman Mahon of Watertown were killed and mortally injured respectively. Express Messenger Clifton of Utica and two score passengers suffered serious injuries or bruises. The locomotive and cars left the track after hitting an open switch with high speed. both men were pinned under the engine.
Victor Hartman age 26 formerly of Shippensburg is jailed in Lancaster on a bigamy charge awaiting September court. At a magistrate’s hearing he faced two women who each proved they were married to him. Hartman sought reconciliation, but both women rejected him.
A $6,500,000 mortgage on Knickerbocker Ice company property in Philadelphia was filed in Schuylkill county. The mortgagee is the Pennsylvania Company for Insurances on Lives and Granting Annuities. The sole ice dam in the county sits in Rush township.
In Des Moines on August 8 Mrs Antoninette Woulde widow of Lt H A Woulde U S A who was killed two years ago died by self inflicting gunfire at Fort Des Moines. Despondency over her husband’s death and ill health said to have driven the tragedy.
