The first American whist congress finished its labors Friday morning and adjourned sine die. The date and place of the next congress were left to the executive committee of the American Whist League, which will govern future congresses. E. B. Elliott of Milwaukee was elected president.
Dispatches from London on April 18 report Chilean rebels defeating Balmaceda’s forces at Pozo de Almonte with 1700 soldiers killed and 1000 wounded. Rebels gain absolute control of the northern provinces.
An explosion of fire damp in the Hugo coal pit near Kattowitz Prussia on Thursday killed ten miners instantly and injured several others.
Ashland Wisconsin April 17 reports say filing on Omaha railroad grant lands would be postponed sparking dismay among filers. Crowds deserted ranks as Secretary Noble ordered suspensions. veterans recalled waiting weeks with tears and anxiety over stakes and losses. Some feared potential unrest, though no outbreaks occurred.

A fire at 2 30 a m Thursday destroyed the wholesale drug house of Charles Leich & Co in Evansville. Stock was a total loss. Insurance 60 000, total loss 90 000. Dixon Mackey & Co wholesale boots and shoes suffered water damage of 15 000. Building owned by D J Mackey, completed a month ago, with 50 000 loss and no insurance.
