A blind mother laments her loss and longs to see her baby as she clings to faith. She speaks of deep anguish, hope for heavenly sight, and the strength to endure with her child cradled close despite her sightless state. Her husband’s tenderness and the prospect of reunion in heaven anchor her resolve.
Charles Murphy and his sister Ellen, orphans in western Ireland, endure poverty after their parents’ death. They find aid with cousin Tom Handley, suffer illness and want, and Charles learns bog oak carving. A chance meeting with Miss Elwyn leads to a forged path, restoring a coin, earning a tool, and ultimately securing a patron who helps them prosper. Charles becomes an architect and bog oak craftsman. Ellen marries a physician, Mary is aided, and their story ends in hopeful employment for others.
