Murder of Emile Amann Shocks Town on Jan 27 1911

The body of Emile Amann was found Jan 28 near the Water Co reservoir on Tanner Hill after he left with John M. Andrews to inspect a valve. Three gunshot wounds caused instantaneous death. Andrews faced intense scrutiny as the investigation unfolded, with a coroner’s jury declining to name a shooter.

Andrews remanded for murder trial in June Quarter Sessions

John M. Andrews was remanded to jail by Justice Perry for trial at the June Quarter Sessions on the charge of murdering Emile Amann on January 27. The preliminary hearing lasted two and a half hours with witnesses from the coroner's inquest. A new witness, William H Messenger, testified he saw Andrews coming down from the hillside and appeared to discuss the case with someone. The defense argued time details were uncertain and noted the revolver near Amann matched the weapon sold to W. H. Allen and later shown by him to Andrews. The magistrate indicated he would hold further proceedings.

Stenographic Hearing Testimony of Emile Amann Incident details

Dr Wallace recalls acquaintance with Emile Amann for 25 years. Amann visited the Warren livery barn about 8 pm on January 27 1911 requesting a buggy rig for a short ride and to be charged to Amana or Andrews. The bay mare had a white hind foot. Harness was muddy, buggy with dirt.
