Buffalo on April 10 saw no cars moving after 6:30 pm amid massed troops. Rioters attacked strikebreakers on Niagara and Tonawanda streets. shots and a stabbing occurred as Major Kemp ordered charges. Several injuries reported. lines around barns and calls for more troops grew amid rising tension.
In the Commons Reginald McKenna says Mrs Pankhurst is not being forcibly fed at Holloway. She has refused food, the prison doctor has not advised release, and five of 14 hungry suffragettes are being forcibly fed. The militants deny involvement with an anonymous death threat to Judge Lush.
In Mercer county court, I A Hoffman of Brooklyn was freed on $10,000 bail after a car he drove killed Miss May Duryea in Princeton. Car owner Joseph F Moran, also charged, is at liberty on $500 bail. Moran’s license was revoked by the motor vehicles department for speeding through Freehold at no less than 40 mph. Moran is vice president of Atlantic Base Ironworks of Brooklyn. his chauffeur’s license was revoked.
Edwin C. Smith of Addison denied to a correspondent a charge that an engineer involved in the Lackawanna wreck near Corning New York on July 4 was not prosecuted due to a political bargain between his friends and county officials. The crash killed 40 people.
Miss Ethel Carew Roosevelt, daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, married Dr Richard Derby at the Protestant Episcopal church in Oyster Bay last week. About 300 guests attended the church and Sagamore Hill reception, with Nahan Franko's orchestra at the service and Miss Ernestine Nerrill of Boston singing at both venues.
New Washington reports show parcel post mailed top 150 million in first three months based on data from the 50 largest post offices. Chicago leads with 6,895,744 parcels in two months, while New York handles 5,973,075 and Boston 1,657,036.
Town boards and highway officials in Chautauqua county New York met to estimate repairs after recent floods. Townships report damages from two thousand to four thousand dollars per bridge, with total county damages near one hundred thousand.
Wilkes Barre April 10 The cigar store of John J McDevitt a millionaire for a day was burglarized during the night. Much stock and 18 dollars in cash were taken. McDevitt had once written burglars detailing entry and exit and how a haul could be made. The burglars followed his instructions and the police have no clue. The joke backfired as the break in occurred after his public letter.
Albany reports Senator Stephen J. Stilwell of the Bronx is on trial before the senate judiciary committee. His counsel will argue that George H. Kendall, president of the New York Bank Note Company, leveled the extortion charge to push favorable legislation for Kendall’s bill. Kendall seeks to curb the stock exchange from refusing to list Kendall engraved securities. The assembly passed the bill Tuesday without a negative vote. The defense contends the deal has no parallel in legislative history.
Four convicts Mouillard Bacher eau Fossey and Marcheval escaped in April from the Cayenne penal settlement. They lost their way starved Fossey Marcheval died and was eaten by the others who then seized a boat and fled to sea. A tempest wrecked the boat near the Maroni river and the three survivors were recaptured. They confessed cannibalism.
London April 10. Miss Lucy Dodge the American girl who left home to make a name for herself returns to Seymour street after a conference with her mother. A compromise was reached but she reserves the right to act as she pleases. She now desires to become a hospital nurse.
Seven American physicians reached Belgrade aboard April 10 to assist the Servian Red Cross in relief work, advancing relief efforts during the ongoing crisis as advised to the state department.
Trumbull Cary, renowned owner breeder and exhibitor of hunting horses, died at his East Main street home in Batavia N Y last Saturday night at 8 15 o clock He was born August 1849 and had lived in Batavia all his life He leaves a wife three daughters Mrs Ralph Plumb Mrs Colman Curtis of Buffalo and Mrs E P Smith of Allendale N J his mother Mrs Walter Cary of Buffalo five brothers Thomas Walter Seward George and Charles Cary of Buffalo and a sister Mrs L D Rumsey of Buffalo.
Esme Temple 18 of unknown origin travels from Liberty New York to New York City seeking Dr Friedmann for her consumptive brother Herbert. After failing to secure treatment and exhausting funds she disguises herself and returns by hopping trains. She faints on arrival and learns her brother died that morning.
Fred Weaver, 34, was fatally cut in two while sawing ties at a Presho mill six miles from Corning New York on Monday morning. He fell against the saw, apparently after a fainting spell, unseen by coworkers who later found part of his body. Coroner W E Barron of Addison investigated. Weaver leaves a widow four children and a brother Jesse in Corning.
Jockey club headquarters in New York City announced a revival of racing at three major venues Belmont Park Jamaica and Saratoga starting Decoration Day May 30 with Belmont 18 days three per week through July 6 Jamaica 12 days on the same plan through August 1 and Saratoga daily for four weeks then potential fall racing at Empire City Aqueduct Jamaica and Belmont Park depending on conditions.
Lewis Pulse of Salamanca discovers his father’s body in brush north of Hetzel street West Salamanca after he had been missing since Friday noon. Coroner O S Martin rules heart disease caused death, noting a two year history of the ailment. Mr Pulse lived in Salanmaca area over 50 years and was once a noted fox hunter.
Gas was struck on Peleg Clapper’s farm near McKean Pennsylvania during an oil well drill last week. A live coal dropped into the well ignited the gas creating flames rising ten to fifteen feet. If oil is not reached the gas could supply two or three families.
Mrs Rachel Neill, mill owner and former Progressive treasurer, stood in a trench for hours to block Isaac Blanchard from connecting his garage to the city sewer. William A Lord sought an injunction to restrain her interference as neighbors dispute lane access and deed provisions.
Philadelphia born Vivi an Prescott, 904 North Broad Street, wins permission to compete in the 600 mile Indianapolis race. She previously rode as a mechanician in the Vanderbilt cup event with Neil Whalen and trained under Barney Oldfield and other noted drivers. Prescott aims to set a record for her city.
The Matt pension bill sailed through the Pennsylvania House by a 166 to 7 vote. Only Rep Gray of Cambria spoke against. Rep Matt of Bedford argued it needed no explanation. The measure, carrying 1.5 million dollars, grants Civil War pensions to Pennsylvania veterans with graduated rates of 5, 6, or 7 dollars monthly based on years of service.
The New York assembly approved the Cole bill regulating farm product commissions with 110 votes to 9 after a long debate. It requires a state license and a $3000 fidelity bond before doing business, and lets the shipper bring merchants to a state agriculture hearing for faulty payments or accounting. Revocation of the license follows sustained charges.
Pittsburg April 10 freight Frederick Wagner was excused from criminal court jury service after explaining painful corns kept him from sitting for more than 30 minutes Judge Swearingen sympathized and granted the exemption noting the difficulty of corns.
