Wilkes-Barre April 4 Without an offer of recognition from the car companies the miners leaders’ committee will not back any settlement to the rank and file. They plan to skip a referendum and seek a convention vote to decide on any agreement, with notices sent to locals for April 15 and a convention set for April 22 in Scranton or Wilkes-Barre.
In Atlantic City a young woman dying in City Hospital after a Sunday night poison attempt is identified as Eloise Evelyn Dukes wife of George Dukes of New York. Her alleged husband Martyn Davis Hendrickson of Gowanda NY denies involvement and says he was away when she collapsed in his arms. Dukes offers to pay all hospital costs.
London April 4 reports Lieutenant General Sir George Macworth Buckworth KC B appointed governor of Bermuda to succeed the late Lieutenant General Sir Frederick Kitchener. Buckworth takes over duties as the British colony’s senior official following Kitchener’s death.
Leslie Reynolds, 77-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Edward Reynolds of Shingle House nine miles south of Bolivar, died after an accident Monday when he climbed into a buggy. His left leg was torn off at the knee by the wheel and later amputated. He died ten hours after being taken to a doctor.
Fred R. Eaton died at his residence in Olean from apoplexy aged 79. He leaves a widow, daughter Mrs. S. H. Bradley of Olean, and son Earl Hooker Eaton of New York. Former village president, fire chief, canal toll collector, and Albany assembly doorkeeper, he spent many years in dry goods and jewelry business.
Journal dispatches from Jiminez show General Emilio Campa defeated at Parral and retreating to the liberal base, with 23 liberal defenders near Parral. Federals under General Tellez arrive from Torreon, boosting defense and signaling a likely battle between Campa and federal forces, delaying Orozco’s southward plan.
About 150 candidates for the state legislature pledged to support a bill for equal suffrage for men and women if elected. One thousand five hundred quizzing letters were sent by the Pennsylvania Woman Suffrage association asking candidates to back a constitutional referendum. Refusal to answer was treated as opposition.
Mary Corkhill seven-year-old of Ellendale Delaware injured when her brother swung an axe and severed two fingers and badly damaged her hand. She bound the wound with a string and walked with her younger brother to home over a mile for help where a physician amputated four fingers.
Cincinnati reports Mrs. John Reichert wife of City Detective Reichert carried a locust thorn for two years in her body. The half inch green thorn traveled from her left elbow to her right ankle without hitting a vital area. A doctor previously extracted what seemed to be all of it when she was a girl in Bracken county Kentucky now at last the thorn emerged.
A sad death occurs at 7 30 PM Wednesday at the Bradley home on Brown Betty street when Mrs Anne Bradley dies after a week long illness of grip and bronchitis. Born in County Down Ireland 83 years ago she married Arthur Bradley who died in 1872. Eleven children were born to the couple seven survive. Requiem high mass was said at Holy Rosary Church and the remains were interred in Onoville New York. Sistersville Review March 21.
Los Angeles April 4 Calbraith P. Rodgers first to fly coast to coast in a third attempt fell during a Long Beach test flight shortly after 2 pm He plunged into shallow water near the pier and died within minutes The accident left Rodgers crushed beneath the wreckage His wife and he had been staying at the Hotel Maryland in Pasadena.
Pittsburg April 4 dictagraph testimony described conversations in the room of Jonas R McClintock with Mrs Marguerite Fellabom in her habeas corpus case to gain custody of her daughter Clara Marie 2½. Detectors said voices came from the dictagraph while Mrs Fellabom blushed as the transcripts were read.
In London Mrs. R. Scott, wife of the Antarctic explorer, says she is not worried for Captain Scott’s safety. She notes he remained south to complete scientific research and that news may not come this year. She emphasizes there was never a race to the pole and that the mission aims to clarify unknown Antarctic conditions.
Lula Snyder a 30 year old resident of Oil City died by suicide after declaring life not worth living. She leaped from the Allegheny Valley railroad bridge into the swollen Allegheny river and was swept away. The body was not recovered.
Louise Burns 17 of Moosic was struck by a moving train on a Delaware and Hudson siding while walking with Raymond Curl 19 toward her home. Carl, their companion, escaped but was later found not criminally responsible and discharged.
Miss Adelaide Tonkin waited for Curtiss Wainwright Stetson at 10 am in New Haven to marry him. After an hour she called his boarding place and learned he had left for Canada. Tonkin, a stenographer, is well known in the city.
