In Clarendon on Saturday, Frank Quinn and Coyle fought in the streets. Quinn lost a finger. The region reports rapid oil activity with many rigs drilling on Davis tract and noxious fires abating. Prices rise for apples, potatoes, and flour as business remains dull in town.

If a tariff could be administered in this fashion

David A. Wells argues that if tariffs were imposed openly as in hypothetical scenarios—silk dress buyers stopped by Treasury, farmers forced to supply surplus, wheat planted for steel rails—the nation could not sustain such a system longer than needed to elect a Congress to repeal it. He cites shortages and overreach affecting women shoppers, farmers, and rail interests to warn against covert and coercive tariffs.

Pointed notes and rebukes in mid 19th century press

A Milwaukee attorney's note to the Pension Department mentions a June 28 order about Edward P. Clark, number 874,282, and suggests moving papers forward or delaying. The Utica Observer condemns the Buffalo Dispatch for printing memorial obituaries, while Oswego Times accuses Canal Auditor Place of bluffing. The piece questions delays in Star Route fraud investigations and potential influence over justice.

Love and Time in an Old Garden Poem Fragment

Fragmentary verse recalls a past romance in a garden setting. A speaker addresses a former lover as memories linger, musing on love's fleeting sweetness, aging, and the shadow of time. The poem weaves flowers, nostalgia, and a child’s gaze to contrast youth and older days.

Bethel memories: Barnum gift and colonial daily life

A long reminiscence recalls Bethel Connecticut life in 1810s and 1820s through Barnum’s gift of a $10,000 bronze fountain and villagers’ frugal routines. It details home labor, food, clothing, and domestic habits, plus travel by horse, local trades, and rural governance.
