New Light in a Schoolmaster Tale of Stoddard
The account recites a district Iowa teacher Willis K Stoddard reading Joseph Cook on a rule where a master takes the pupil’s punishment upon himself. Samuel Johnson, the hardest boy, accepts a longer switch and, after seeing the teacher’s restraint, asks to fetch a better one. Johnson finally strikes the teacher as instructed, the class viewing the act as justice, transforming the pupil and the school climate.
