Richmond Reminiscences of the Civil War Echoes
A circa 19th century visitor recalls Richmond after two decades, noting population growth to about 30,000 with a large colored share. He describes fashionable streets, new boulevards, industrial expansion, Libby Prison’s remains, and the White House of the Confederacy now used as a school. He details Confederate graves, monuments, and notable figures including Jefferson Davis, Monroe, and Tyler, contrasting perceptions of endurance and memory.
