A king demands a highrenown monarch to sing and cheer him. A gray sad-eyed bird pleads for one word of encouragement and laments a lonely life. King grows angry, belittling the nameless bird, insisting his cage must hold a royal bird.
Philip Bartel, a strong, handsome former seafarer, leaves the sea to seek a home in the countryside. He finds work on Deacon Larrabe’s farm in Ashford, joins the church choir, and is drawn to Clara Palmer, the village physician’s daughter, whose singing brightens his life and brings him into the community.
Clara and Philip’s romance blooms through music and trust as he saves two children at Ashford lake and seeks her hand in marriage. He reveals an immense estate settlement, cancels debts, and gifts his father in law a proffered life in a peaceful Ashford farm, securing a future built on love.
The Democratic State Convention adjourned sine die at five, nominating Warren J. Woodward for Supreme Judge on the sixth ballot, John Latta for Lieutenant Governor, F. Temple for Auditor General, and Wm. McCandless for Internal Affairs.
