Wealth in One Song The Most Successful Ballad of the Century
Milwaukee composer Charles K Harris, self taught and unable to read music, wrote After the Ball in hours after a ball. The song has sold over 800,000 copies, earning Harris about 1,200 a day at peak, and made him a fortune from a Milwaukee start. Harris, born in Poughkeepsie in 1804, moved to Milwaukee as a boy, published his own work, and saw the tune become a world wide sensation across bands, theaters, and even wind up in music boxes and organs.
