Feud Ends in Blood and Ruin in Rural County
A three-farm feud between Gaffneys and Greens spiraled from a mule dispute in May 1870 to multiple murders and vigilante actions. Abner Gaffney and Scott Green were killed early, followed by further shootings, arsons, and a breakdown of law. By the final acts, two headmen died in a town corner shootout, the county bankrupt, churches burned, and community ties utterly shattered.
