Cranberry Marsh Pioneered by John Webb in 1857
In Forker River a one legged downeaster named John Webb began cranberry cultivation in 1857 by draining, sand ing a swamp, and planting cuttings. The method produced unprecedented crops within three years. Since then three enemies, the threesquare grass, bulrush, and a web worm, threaten bogs, requiring yearly upkeep and eventual control by flooding in winter. Webb became wealthy from this discovery, transforming local cranberry production across New Jersey.
