King John’s Lesson of a Drunken Rescue and Revenge
An 1693 tale recounts how a New Zealand brig, aided by a drunken King John and his 50 followers on Nairsa, is seized at night. The crew is captured, the ship drifted, and the mutineers are subdued with rum and force. After freeing his own crew, the narrator retakes control, punishes the rebels, recovers the vessel, and leaves the island with a heavy debt of damages.
