Prohibitionist Record Highlighted in Niles Case
A Philadelphia internal revenue officer named Wm Linn travels the state claiming authority to organize a protective association for manufacturers and wholesale dealers. He is said to push for J B Niles, a Republican Auditor General candidate, by arguing he helped liquor interests at Harrisburg. The piece stresses Niles’s strong pro prohibition record, noting votes in 1881 and later and condemns Linn’s campaign as thin and deceptive.

Sensational Bradford tale and legal notes clash in brief
A Bradford, Pennsylvania tale recounts a supposed apparition of Ashton, a bear, and a child cradle lull on a rural night, with neighbors reporting visions of the ghostly Major Ashton and his tame bear. Separately, cable dispatches from London discuss the O'Donnell case and Roger A. Pryor joining defense efforts, while Philadelphia Times recalls a vanished Ohio GOP margin from two decades ago.

Noted Women in Canada’s Gilded Circles and Louise of Lorne
A Canberra era column surveys royal connections in Canada noting Louise of Lorne as first lady of the Dominion and daughter of the Duke of Abercorn. It contrasts aristocratic manners at Rideau Hall with Canadian tastes turning toward common sense social etiquette and self reliance. It questions whether Canadian daughters will imitate British court fashion or stay homemaker in social roles.

Old Santa Fe Town Visited by Traveler from Americus
From NES Amelico, October 1583, a correspondent recounts Santa Fe as a mixed town where Spanish churches and Pueblo streets meet Yankee enterprise. He visits San Miguel Church built 1689 and rebuilt 1710, notes its grim history, the oldest nearby adobe house seen by Coronado in 1540, and the Our Lady of the Rosary chapel with annual rain processions. Modern post offices, banks, and hotels line the plaza while the Spanish quarter stays adobe and primitive. A vivid street scene shows Pueblo filigree wares, Navajo visitors, and a contrast between old and new in late nineteenth century Santa Fe society.

Corry Bonds Debacle Cited as Illegal Debt Void
The 1853 act allowed Corry to issue bonds to cover debt but Gibbs and Sterrett offered to move operations here and employ 175 workers daily for five years in exchange for 80,000 in bonds. Councils issued 80,000 to Gibbs & Sterrett and 29,000 to Slare & Johnson. Bonds printed, maturing, and payments challenged as evasion of the law. Arbitrator Whittelsey filed a decision declaring the debt null and void.
