Ainsworth Spofford and the New Library Rise in Washington
The Capitol sees the east rise a grand new library building with a gold dome. Spofford, longtime Librarian of Congress, is praised as the mind behind the project and its future home, with plans to move in two to three years and space for millions of volumes.

Roths and the first family tale from old Pennsylvania
Several years ago there was an old family in Pennsylvania named Roth. The long line of Roths was the main claim to distinction, with blue blood stories and a party in a small town where Mrs Roth boasted of Mayflower origins. A doctor visitor debunked the boast, saying the Bible claimed the Roths as the first family. The piece mixes social satire with anecdotes about Count d Orsay, heart growth notes, royal pin money, and other period curiosities from leisure and society pages.
