A Famous Duel Between Gwin and McCorkle Ends In Disgraceful Standoff

A Washington rivalry between United States Senator John B. Gwin and Congressman Joe McCorkle led to a famed bloodless duel. After heated exchanges on ships and in California, the two men met near Monterey for a rifle duel. Seven shots were fired without a wound as ammunition ran out, thirty miles from Monterey and miles from any help, ending the encounter. Their quarrel was eventually settled, and the episode became a noted historical anecdote in dueling annals.
