The Panic of 1873 and the Money Power’s Role
Abstracted notes argue the 1857 and 1873 panics stemmed from the money power and bank manipulations. England’s shift of specie harmed US banks, leading to suspensions and distress, then Civil War financing expanded. McCulloch and financial factions allegedly drained circulation to bonds, triggering contraction, business stagnation, and hard times, blamed on money power rather than overproduction.
