Uneasy Republicans over Deficiency in U S Treasury
Washington May 25 The alarm in Republican circles over a likely budget deficit grows as Judge Peters from Kansas questions forecast accuracy. Sen. Sayers of Texas warns the McKinley bill could push the deficit above 60 million if revenue and pensions are not adjusted. Windom estimates end-year surplus but omits revenue loss from tariff changes. Pension bills may require 10 million shortfall, with three remedies discussed including using gold reserves, sinking fund repeal, or new bonds. Conservative lawmakers fear excess appropriations this session will exceed revenues by millions, potentially widening the deficit beyond 100 million next year.

Contested election gasses and Hill amendment proposal
Governor Hill of New York proposes submitting to the people a constitutional amendment to strip each house of its power to judge elections and grant that power to the courts. He argues contests would then be merit based, reducing partisan bias and protecting incumbents. The Nashville Banner warns courts may carry partisan influence, suggesting leaving contested seats to the houses while the public remedies issues.
