Youngsville County Notes and Local Trade Report

W Agrelius’s shingle mill, Kinnear’s brick block groceries, Aurelius’s drug stock, Kinnear & McDowell hardware, J.G McKee groceries, the post office run by W. J. He notes social events, ties to nearby towns, and a push against liquor sales, with a large meeting at the court house advocating prohibition. Alderman Jaehne Convicted in Bribery Case in 1884 Trial
Henry W Jaehne vice president of New York's Common Council was convicted of accepting twenty thousand dollars for backing Jake Sharp's Broadway surface railroad plan. He voted with eighteen city fathers on August 30, 1884, to approve the scheme. Jaehne, arrested March 18, released on fifteen thousand dollars bond, later re-arrested as his bondsman feared he would flee to Canada. His bond rose to twenty five thousand dollars. He is about thirty five, son of a Saxony immigrant, and has long faced suspicions about his shop being a fence for stolen silverware. He subscribes to Democratic county politics and has supported railroad franchises. Punishment for bribery could be up to ten years in prison and a five thousand dollar fine, plus forfeiture of office.
