Sugar Trust Criticized Over Sugar Prices and Tariff Use

The Philadelphia Press accuses the sugar trust of lowering raw sugar and raising refined prices to boost profits by about 10.6 million annually. It argues Congress diverts revenue from sugar duties to the people and warns that protecting tariffs are being misused to enrich private interests, urging action against the trust. It notes harsh working conditions and low wages for refinery workers, many employed as Poles and Hungarians under contract. It also covers the Free Tin Plate Bill proposing a switch back to the one cent per pound rate for two years and then free-list status. The piece frames a broader fight over protectionism.

Tariffs Battle Over Free Cotton Ties and Bagging

The House passed a bill to place cotton bagging on the free list, aligning with binding twine, while Republicans oppose and Democrats defend the relief from class legislation. The piece argues tariffs unfairly burden farmers, alleging the cordage industry benefits from protection, and contrasts with historical McKinley tariff actions and a five act account of the oatmeal trust.
