Thankful for Slight Reform in Hayes Era

A partisan critique argues the electorate favored reform over corruption after the 1876 canvass. It claims Republicans stole the presidency through fraud, with Hayes quietly withdrawing federal troops and cutting offices while embracing temperance talk. It notes Mrs. Slayes storing wine bottles and calls Hayes an usurper despite some claimed good.

Beyond the Reach of Prayer in Alleghany Democrat

Hon Sumner Baldwin, observer at the Cincinnati Hayes nomination, compared Hayes to Lincoln. A Republican quipped about slaves, fearing a traitor in the Democrats’ grasp, while Baldwin warned that prayer may be futile for the wavering supporter Nichols.

Hayes gains southern backing amid office applications

Washington correspondent reports Southern Democrats show growing willingness to support Hayes. Thousands seek federal posts, but Georgia alone lists 62 marshal applications, signaling mixed prospects. Great Men Have Their Trouble at Philadelphia Exhibition

Mr Hayes attended the permanent Philadelphia exhibit opening on the tenth inst but returned to Washington in a bad mood. Philadelphia’s heavy Republican mood and weak public enthusiasm contrasted with ex President Grant who received a warmer reception. Grant’s absence from the Germantown reception is interpreted as a snub to Hayes and slaves, with reporters noting the perceived slight and quietly amused by Grant’s quiet retaliation.
