It condemns a theater driven by revenue, urges focus on literature and morals, and calls for reform of Hall management toward preserving virtue and intellectual growth in the community.
Chicago Catholics organize a Diocesan Total Abstinence Society after a high mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Name. Archbishop Feehan endorses and becomes spiritual director. a bureau offers employment to men of good character. League of the Cross backs saloon abstinence but stays outside the union.

The piece criticizes party factionalism in Kellogg Brady and Cannon era politics, notes revenue reform moves and hints at tax relief aims, while stressing banking and Comptroller concerns amid national policy debates.
New York May 6 In a stock exchange announcement the suspension of Grant Ward was reported. The firm tied to General Ulysses S Grant Jr and Ferdinand Ward faced widespread closings of the Cleveland Cincinnati Indianapolis and Omaha lines plus the Nickel Plate second mortgage. Rumors spoke of a deficit around 500000 with Marine Bank suspending. Grant and Ward cited absence of a partner since Saturday as a cause while Grant stated uncertainty about the rumors and financial standing.
