Tariff Bill Favours Trusts Doubling Taxes on Essentials

The Ways and Means committee nears completion of a revised tariff bill that promises tax relief only for sugar and tobacco while sharply raising duties on everyday goods. The measure would burden consumers with higher taxes on glass, chinaware, clothing, hemp, and farm products, and restore old taxes on hides and silk, signaling a policy favoring monopolies and burdening the general public. The piece condemns the bill as a partisan move that preserves war taxes and expands the reach of monopoly.
