The Wives Immense Task Through Harvest and Home
A traditional verse contrasts a wife’s constant domestic labor with the farmer husband’s seasonal toil. It portrays tireless care in chores, childkeeping, and moral duty from autumn to winter, ending with the promise of rest in the father’s heavenly home.

Origin of the word kerosene and early coal oil works
A correspondent corrects an error about kerosene origin. Abraham Gesner coined kerosene in 1847 after distilling coal oil in Prince Edward Island. James Young introduced manufacture in England, with significant 1854 output. Early U.S. and Ohio plants followed, coal oil replaced by crude petroleum, amid a booming market and a notable 1861 fire at Cozzena Brothers in Greenpoint.
