Popess Joan the First A Long-Lost Tale of Saint Peters Chair
A sensational historic sketch recounts Pope Joan as English priest’s daughter born near Mayence. It follows her education in Greece and Rome, disguise as a monk, ascent to Rome’s papacy, secret affair with a cardinal, pregnancy, public shame, and death on Rogations Day around 8538. The piece frames the tale as a controversial medieval fable debunked by ultramontane clergy.
