Wages and protection in 1880 factory work
The Fairfield Tribune notes wages in protected factories lag behind unprotected ones. English unprotected labor earns as much in nine months as American protected labor does in a year. Since 1860 wages rose 19 percent while living costs rose 41.3 percent, showing workers losing real buying power. 1880 was a boom year, yet unemployment rises as owners cut jobs to boost prices.

Two Cent Postage Set for October First
The conference committee of the post office appropriation bill agreed October 1 as the date two cent postage takes effect. The House set January 1, 1864, and the Senate July 1 of the current year. To avoid a large deficiency the two houses compromised, leaving three months of the fiscal year under three cent postage. Department estimates suggest the October 1 reduction will not cause a deficiency much over $1,000,000 for the near fiscal year. The state supreme court recently ruled local election expenses are paid by the districts. Meadville authorities sued, won, Crawford County court verdict reversed by the supreme court. the county commissioners appealed and won.
