Garland community notes on a reading club and local life
The Garland letter describes a two month old literary society meeting for one hour of exercise reading one hour of select readings with music and declamations. It mocks a rival bachelor ubiquitous in the hotel and recounts a row over gossip and moral judgment, noting the local tension between old bachelor wit and respectable conduct and sharing a family tale of debt and spiritualism.
