Beautiful young wife of reporter jailed for forging checks
A San Francisco report says Maud Craig Burke Davis, wife of J C Davis former New York journalist, faces jail for forging and passing more than 2000 in checks on a mythical New York bank. The couple, from Portland, planned a large payback with a store, funded by her dowry. Davis once worked for the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, met his wife there, and they wed at Niagara Falls eight weeks ago. They pawned jewels to reach San Francisco where warrants for Mrs Davis were issued after similar charges by a furniture firm manager and a sewing machine agent. Rochester excitement followed the arrest rumor as Maud Daviss father, H H Craig, a lumber merchant, is believed wealthy.

In Warren Pennsylvania June 14 1895 the Pleasant Bridge Company stockholders refuse the Warren and Pleasant Township proposal to buy their bridge for 10000 arguing the price undervalues the structure by about 33000 to 9000 according to two experts. They propose three disinterested appraisers to determine true value and say the value fixed by them would apply only to the company and not bind public authorities in 1893.
