Statue of Liberty Gift Prompts New York Harbor Monument
A French design from last year envisions a colossal Liberty statue for the American people to stand at Bedloe's Island, with a copper figure 122 feet tall on an 82 foot pedestal and a torch bearing arm bringing total height to 138 feet, or 220 feet above the site. The $120,000 statue cost is largely funded in France, and Auguste Bartholdi leads the project alongside notable French figures. The plan is to have the torch model ready for the Paris International Exhibition and cast completed soon after, with New York urged to begin pedestal construction to welcome Liberty across the harbor.

The lover, heartbroken, sees Dorothea in the court procession, while Meta’s guilt remains unspoken. The tale ends with the lover living on, unmarried, and the two women divided by social ties.
