Davis Portrait Recalls Escape Attempt Story
In a Jackson Mississippi state library portrait of Davis, a narrative recalls his escape attempt after an alarm. He described waking in cavalry boots and gray blouse, stepping from his tent, and facing a Federal rider within 30 to 40 feet. Mrs Davis shielded him with a shawl as he moved to seize the horse, but the rider lowered his carbine and Davis was captured.
