A Salamanca burglary spree culminates in Dr. R. D. Wilcox of Salamanca firing on a thief as he attempted to enter Wilcox's dwelling. The burglar, later identified as Patrick Sullivan, was wounded and captured after neighbors aided. Sullivan, about 45, 180 pounds, claimed no clear co-conspirators and faced uncertain prognosis.
In Jamestown News a historic letter dated July 29 1835 shows Greeley instructing Bates on carrying the New Yorker through a dire period. He describes price hikes, a planned November list, and a strategy to gain subscribers. He notes offering his share of the paper to cover a $2000 debt.
From Clarendon June 4 the Children s Home Mission Band prepares for a Japanese tea party with a cake and tea serving in striking costumes. Miss Esther Hunt from Centreville, Tom Jordon at home, Mrs S G Pinkerton of Pittsfield in town, lightning damaged D O Horn's store telegraph office, Mrs M Watt and Flora Horn visited Corry. Crops look poor. many locals ill or traveling. pensioned veteran B lost an arm. Tam O Shanter notes.
On May 25 a large reception honored Miss Calista Jones at Jamestown High School. Miss Jones has been a leading educator for the past 50 years, recognized for her long service and impact.
Mrs. Mary Cable wife of J W Cable prominent local merchant died June 3 after a prolonged illness. Doctor J M Davies Warren said the cause was Phthisis Pulmonalis. She was 33, leaves husband three children. Funeral attended by many, pallbearers from Maccabees, burial in St Marys cemetery Pittsburg Cathedral services to follow in Pittsburg.
