Rescue of Lieutenant Greely Arctic Party Recounted

Expedition to Arctic saved six lives under Schley command
The 1884 Arctic relief mission cost over 1 million dollars and included the Thetis, Bear, Alert, and Lock Garry, led by Commander W S Schley. It rescued six men including Lieutenant Greely born 1824 Newburyport MA. Greely rose from private to First Lieutenant and then Captain of the Eighty-first Colored Infantry before leaving service in 1897. He and his comrades faced cold and hunger, with Greely surviving while most others did not.
