Lieutenant Peary and crew boarded the Falcon at St Johns N F for Greenland via Labrador. At 8 00 pm the ship cast off and set sail amid cheering crowds while Labrador bound dogs and furs awaited at the station. Weather was rough with northeast wind fog and rain as the expedition began its Arctic voyage.

Meadville man killed felling trees near Grand Valley
W J Smock of Meadville was killed near Grand Valley last Thursday about 9am while cutting hemlock with another worker for L B Woods Company. A large limb struck him after a tree lodged on another, breaking both legs an arm and his neck. He was 32, left a wife and five children. Funeral was held at Silas Mumford's nearby.

Mystery Steamer Alexandria Foils Mohican Chase
The Alexandria sailing from San Francisco to Honolulu in April tried to escape the U S Mohican in the Bering Sea on June 25. After firing two blank shots the Alexandria mounted a six pounder and fired, crippling the Mohican before a fog enabled her to flee and the Mohican laid by for six hours of repairs.

Kansas City Mo July 20 Secretary Mobler of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture issues a supplementary report to the crop bulletin. If conditions stay favorable Kansas will post the largest corn crop in state history aside from 1889 with 278 million bushels on 6.82 million acres. Estimated acreage could exceed last year by about 12 percent to around 16.4 million acres and a yield near 270 million bushels.

Accident Injury in Lumber Woods At Allegany River
Jack Hillman of this place was injured while working in the lumber woods across the Allegany river yesterday evening. His double-bitted axe flew from the handle and struck him on the lower jaw, severing bone and part of his tongue. The dull edge caused the worse injury. the other edge might have been fatal. He was brought home this morning and is expected to recover with severe facial scars.
