Tariff debate and political letters from 1888
A collection of editorial notes and letters discussing protectionist tariffs, their impact on wages and prices, and the 1880s political scene. Ralph Beaumont cites historical tariff effects 1875 to 1878, while other voices question tariffs as a cost to consumers. A St Louis manufacturer denounces protectionism, and local letters urge party activism ahead of elections.

Questions on protective policy and iron workers wages
The writer asks why 100000 iron workers are unemployed and whether high protection keeps wages up. He questions if protective tariffs provide steady jobs and good wages across booms and busts, and if they prevent mill shutdowns when operators seek to lower scales.

Miners in Alaska Rely on Russian Ovens for Warmth
Miners in Alaska use simple Russian stone ovens to keep cabins warm and comfortable. The ovens are boxlike, three to four feet long, eighteen to twenty inches square, with a metal top and chimney of the same stone. Last winter and the one before, many miners went out daily for firewood, but no severe frostbite occurred. Indians live in brush houses, surviving mainly on dried moose, caribou meat, and fish. A modern Washington: 2000 pounds of soap.
