Levi Phillips of Farmington died on the 27th ult at about age 60s in Jamestown after a sun stroke. One of the county’s oldest settlers, he came with his father from Bennington Vermont in 1893 to Pine Grove township near Russellsberg. Married Paova Marsh in 1894, they had eleven children, nine living. He guided a Christian, hard working life, left a comfortable estate to his children. Funeral attendance exceeded two hundred vehicles, reflecting his esteem. He died after a period of farm work with mind clear to the end.
Executive Committee members Lott Orr Cagewell Wiltsie met in Jackson Hall July 2 to set Warren Gounly Agricultural Fair dates September 9 10 11 and 12 and ticket pricing. Premiums offered 100 for best club display 50 for second and 26 for third with premiums issued around July 16. Also lists numerous local officials associated with fair districts. Discussion shifts to Democratic presidential possibilities and Chicago Convention nominees with Governor Cleveland seen favorably. The Fourth of July is noted with fireworks and rockets.
News from New York June 20 1884 reports Commodore Corselius Garrison one of America's richest men has made an assignment to John T. Terry of B D Morgan & Co. His liabilities and assets are not yet stated but are expected to exceed existing holdings. Garrison rose from poverty to vast wealth through shipping gas and rail ventures and civic service in San Francisco and New York.
The Sunday Capital reprints Grover Cleveland’s Buffalo speech condemning Blaine and Kelly’s bid to name the Democratic nominee. The paper argues Blaine’s circle seeks a candidate to defeat Cleveland and accuses Blaine, Butler, and Kelley of inflaming foreign-born voters. It recalls Irish prisoners in Ireland and contrasts Cleveland’s stance with Lowell’s policy.
Invitations go out from Syracuse conventions for the St John Circuit of Temperance Camps to spread across New York and into northern Pennsylvania. Noted speakers include ex Gov John P St John and Rev Dr T DeWitt Talmadge among others. The Chautauqua Point Camp runs July 10 to 25 with tents pitched by churches families and individuals. W Og Trunkey chairman of the Democratic County Committee declines the District Attorney nomination offered at the county convention. He states he cannot accept or perform the duties if elected and notes previous candidacies, implying no exception to declining under current circumstances.
Thomas W Phillips challenges oil union leader David Kirk in a long open letter printed in the Pittsbury Digateh. He argues against halting drilling, defends supply and demand laws, warns of economic harm to workers and manufacturers, criticizes mystery fraud, and declines join a committee or idle oil venture.
