The Queer Lobbyists Found In And Out Of Congress Hall

Special correspondence from Washington June 22 describes the bustle in the congressional halls as lobbyists, including women, widows, and former officials, vie for influence. It notes payments once large, now smaller, cites figures tied to Credit Mobilier and Pacific Mail, and profiles figures like Dr Mary Walker, Madame lawyer charity lobbyist, and ex congressman Dick Franchot. The piece comments on the slow Congress, varied motives, and the line between legitimate persuasion and fraud.

Death of a scientific woman in Jersey City

New York reports the death of Erminnie Smith, 48, a noted Indianologist and mineralogist who led the Smithsonian folk lore project on the Iroquois language. She founded Jersey City’s Aesthetic Society, lectured to major scientific bodies, and left a near finished Iroquois dictionary and a folklore volume. Her work preserved vanishing native cultures and inspired women in science.
