The Ship Magnet and the Lost Adventurer's Tale
In 1865 Alexander Cross arrived at Rio with a tale of gold northward, chartered ships, and a voyage to a Hottentot coast. The Magnet sailed with Cross aboard, but he and his crew vanished? later found entombed aboard a derelict ship. The Magnet was sighted again near Tristan da Cunha, later wrecked, and a whaling voyage recovered her long after. The crew deserted, leaving only corpses, gear, and a grim log of events aboard.

Lost ship log reveals mutiny and lone survivor tale
Fragmentary diary entries recount a voyage where the captain and crew were deceived, mutiny aboard, and the longboat escapade. The wreck was left to drift after dismastings, with a single survivor dying of starvation and then suicide as the gold hunters pursued a new claim. The narrative transitions to a New York Herald account of a crowded Sixth Avenue L train where one woman manipulates seating, prompting a witty exchange about nerve and unprotected women. A humor piece recalls Prudence and a bank cashier with a photo of himself, leading to a lost fortune.
