Men of the Hour Champion Kelley Born in Philadelphia
William D. Kelley, born in Philadelphia sixty eight years ago, rose from a jeweller apprentice to a respected lawyer judge and longtime congressman. A staunch anti slavery advocate and tariff supporter he led naval affairs hearings and chaired the Ways and Means Committee. Known as Judge or Pig Iron Kelley he remains a principled public servant. In a separate plea the Women’s Christian Temperance Union urges Christian unity for a day of prayer to fight intemperance, seeking support from the Evangelical Alliance and churches. The call asks pastors to dedicate January 4 and January 9 1883 to prayer and fundraising for temperance work.
