Farmers' Club Meeting Probes County Finances and Roads
At a recent Farmers' club session in the courthouse, attorney C. H. Noyes outlined a $32,000 surplus from the auditor’s report, noting taxes delayed until October under the new law and $9,000 borrowed from the Rouse fund. He said without treasury cash the county would have had to borrow. The 1889 tax rate rose to fund expenses, with prior years varying from 41 to 4 mills. Next year’s goal is 3 mills. The club debated investing the Rouse bequest, as the county has no debt since the late Mr. Rouse. The court house and jail were funded from the Rouse money, with the board now deciding how to invest it as a sacred trust. Election results named W. S. Acocks president, Charles Lott vice president, B. F. Morris treasurer, Willis Cowan secretary, and Lott to the state board of agriculture. The group approved resolutions thanking officials and noted open county books for inspection.
