White House Telegraphic Office Run by Montgomery
A rare look inside the White House telegraph and telephone department describes B. F. Montgomery as the on duty expert who handles messages with a private switchboard and typewriter. Messages are printed, logged, and routed directly to recipients or secretaries, with records kept at the main office and extra lines to government instruments. A stray deer incident near Portland Harbor ends with the animal sold for four dollars after being captured from the steamer Lucea Mason.

Huge underwater shell test at Fort Lafayette
Underwater cartridge of 100 pounds gelatine and dynamite was fired from Lt Zalinski’s gun at Fort Lafayette. The shell rested a mile and a quarter below the fort, with two electric fuses in the wooden tail piece. It did not explode yesterday possibly due to batteries or discharge. A prior test fired a 200 pound conical shot 2220 yards at 30 degrees.

How W H Vanderbilt Won His Wife in Albany Romance
Detroit Free Press recounts the courtship of Mrs W H Vanderbilt née Martha Kissam, daughter of a modest clergyman, who met the young Vanderbilt after he was nearly thrown from a bay horse in Albany. He recovered, impressed her father with charm, and they wed after a pleasant evening visit. Also noted are brief items: a veiled vengeance tale from Kentucky, a German university quip about Shakespeare, poultry health tips, and a Portland physician’s oversized mushroom anecdote.
