Washington's Hudson heritage linked to Phillipse and Beverley House
The Hudson valley’s historic grandeur links to Mary Phillipse born at her family manor in Yonkers, Washington wooing her in 1756, and the family’s Tory turn. Benedict Arnold used Beverley House near Garrison as headquarters in 1780, later destroyed by fire, while Washington slept at the Beverley mansion and West Point ties linger on the river.
