Why the New York Sun notes rising state legislature costs
The New York Sun this past Saturday questions why New York Legislature expenses have more than doubled in eleven years from 229 417 in 1867 to 442 153 in 1878. It cites clerks and perquisites, adjournments, and railroad passes as causes, and argues Republican patronage expands costs while voters largely accept it.

A Chicago or New York paper notes that Senator Blaine's resolutions provoke little public response or excitement across the North and South. It calls the move bold yet futile, aiming at the presidency, and predicts the author’s near-impossible path to renomination while urging Congress to focus on commerce and industry.

France under moderate republic shows strong civic liberty
Eight years after the Paris Commune, France's moderate republic dismantles radical slogans. Free press and meetings return, ballots are protected, and government reflects popular will. Socialism wanes, Rochefort’s incendiary articles are dismissed, and even dangerous doctrines find little echo. The piece argues for Republican patience and cites Blaine’s presidential paths via historical precedents, urging resignation from the Senate as necessary for success.
