Indiana Democratic Central Committee opened the campaign with over two hundred speakers across cities and towns. Notables included Senators McDonald and Voorhees, Governors Hendricks and Brockmeyer, Joseph Pulitzer, and Senator Doo Little. Pulitzer attacked Republican claims, arguing the party has failed to protect the Union, free the slave, or preserve the republic. He urged ending Republican rule and centralization, warning the party would destroy the republic if kept in power.
