Personal History of John Stewart Early Settler of Sugar Grove
John Stewart born May 28 1780 in Ireland left a legacy of movement across Delaware Maryland and Warren County to settle in Sugar Grove. He describes crossing the Alleghenies twelve times in a sixty mile journey, becoming a citizen, farming and sugar making, then moving to Beaver County and Pittsburgh before returning home to farm and store keep in 1838. The piece notes strong regional growth, lumber wealth, and rising town life from Indians to turnpikes and steamboats and lists prices for livestock and crops. It ends noting the manuscript’s age, Stewart’s relation to Mrs. Eddy, and the historian intent.
