Funeral Prayer Test Forges Congregationalist Triumph
Hartford papers report a prominent clergyman officiated at an old church member’s funeral. The dead man’s Episcopalian son demanded the Episcopal burial service and sent a prayer book with marks. After reading the marked passages, the clergyman refused to improvise, prompting the sexton to ask for a prayer. The minister replied he had read all marked items "For oooness" sake and the Congregationalists prayed extemporaneously.
