Woodchuck Dinner and Parson Beecher Sketch

A St Louis Republican correspondent recalls Reverend James Beecher visiting backwoodsfolk. His brothers fill his pulpit as he dislikes settled life. A lumberman's wife lacks meat for dinner so a boy is sent to kill a woodchuck. Beecher, in plain clothes, encounters the boy and reveals his identity, then rides on to arrive in time to ease the household meal plan.

Wife Helps Escape Ex-Marshal From Indiana Jail

Levi P. Elliott, former Royal Centre town marshal and later a so-called practicing attorney, was jailed on blackmail charges in Cass circuit court. His wife and two children visited him, then aided his escape by using a torn shawl rope and a sawed window bar to flee from the second story, while a turnkey brought breakfast. The incident is noted amid a column of local humor and moral reflections.
