Special correspondence from Wasuixeron notes efforts in Congress to honor Dr Mary E Walker a famed Civil War figure. In a small attic room in an old house she serves as her own surgeon and nurse reflecting a lifetime of service and struggle.
The article portrays Dr Mary Walker in frail health and penniless exile from public aid. It recalls her wartime courage and independence, detailing her beauty at odds with poverty, her bedbound state, and a recalled wartime anecdote of aiding wounded soldiers with improvised dressings and borrowed vessels.
The narrative recounts Dr Mary Walker’s actions during war time including helping sick soldiers, demanding trains run to Washington, and supporting pensions for widows. It covers her belligerent stance at times, a joke marriage proposal from Chester A Arthur, clashes at the Treasury, and her ongoing medical practice and lectures after service.
